UW Credit Union

UW Credit Union

  • UW Credit Union deploys Cisco Meraki access points and security appliances
  • Site-to-site VPN securely connects all 22 branch locations
  • Traffic shaping used to control bandwidth consumption for different audiences

UW Credit Union is a growing, federally insured financial institution committed to the financial well-being of its customers. The credit union has 187,000 members, 400 employees, 22 branches, and over 100 ATMs throughout Wisconsin. With cloud managed wireless and security appliances, the credit union takes advantage of Meraki features such as Auto VPN and per device group policies to connect all branches and ensure secure access. They also use Systems Manager, Cisco Meraki's Enterprise Mobility Management solution, to manage board members' smartphones and tablets.

Original Networking Challenges

  • Needed to provide a reliable, high-speed WiFi solution for their employees and customers
  • Required advanced security and NCUA (National Credit Union Administration) compliance
  • Small IT team called for an easy to use solution with minimal deployment and administration time

Why Cisco Meraki

  • Plug-and-play devices are configured and managed via the web-based dashboard
  • Configuring multiple SSIDs, Auto VPN, and WAN optimization requires just a few mouse clicks
  • Role-based administration ensures secure control over the network, while offering visibility to staff as needed
“The goal was to deploy WiFi that could support our significant security needs. But we also wanted something that would minimize the time spent to take care of the network.” -Craig Robertson, Information Security Supervisor

The Deployment

  • Cisco Meraki MR access points deployed at HQ and at branch locations
  • Distributed branches connected via site-to-site VPN using Cisco Meraki MX security appliances
  • Staff plugged in devices and network settings were automatically downloaded from the Meraki dashboard, including IP addresses and SSID configurations
  • UWCU-issued iPhones and iPads are centrally managed through the dashboard with Systems Manager

  • 802.1X RADIUS authentication enables UW personnel to access specific networks based on their role
  • Visitors and vendors also have their own SSID with splash page requesting pre-shared key authentication
  • Granular control over bandwidth consumption, enabling regulation of guest network and branch offices separately
  • All branch locations securely connected via site-to-site VPN in two clicks
  • Unauthorized devices blocked from LAN resources through VLAN tagging by SSID, enhancing network security
  • Easy centralized monitoring and troubleshooting of all Cisco Meraki networking devices, as well as mobile devices enrolled in Systems Manager
