Pennoni Associates Inc. is a multi-disciplinary civil engineering consulting firm based in Philadelphia, with 28 offices and 950 employees throughout the Northeastern United States. Their services include construction management, landscape architecture, structural engineering, and land surveying. Cisco Meraki wireless APs, switches, and security appliances offer single pane of glass management for the entire network, and enable secure guest access, site-to-site VPN, and WAN optimization across all 28 offices.

Original Networking Challenges

  • No wireless network before Cisco Meraki, only consumer-grade Internet service
  • Lack of visibility and control over network

Why Cisco Meraki

  • Wanted centralized management for their distributed network
  • Foresaw increasing employee demand for WiFi
  • Easy to scale with plug and play devices
  • Pennoni IT can easily monitor bandwidth and apply Layer 7 traffic shaping to throttle gaming, video, and music, while prioritizing VoIP and video conferencing
  • Just two clicks in the Meraki dashboard to connect disparate offices with site-to-site VPN

“Meraki had the feature set of everything we would have wanted if we sat down and brainstormed our needs - it satisfied our security and guest wireless requirements.” Markus Weidner, Director of IT

The Deployment

  • Started with a trial of Cisco Meraki MR access points
  • Employees noticed an improvement in connectivity and requested it become standard at every Pennoni office
  • Set up a private LAN with RADIUS 802.1x authentication, as well as a public access network
  • Same SSID is used at all offices so employees can enjoy seamless connectivity
  • MX deployed at 17 VPN-connected sites; other offices connected by MPLS
  • MS 24 and 48-port PoE switches deployed as Pennoni outgrew their old hardware
